War on Climate Change

Turn up the heat on the world's leaders

Make climate change the burning issue for 2010

With the Copenhagen climate change conference which took place in December 2009, pressure mounted on the world’s leaders to reach an agreement to cut carbon emissions that contribute to climate change. But what happens now the deal is done? Will climate change still be a burning issue in 2010?

MADE in Europe ran a project for young Christians and Muslims aged between 18-25 to lead a 'War on Climate Change' campaign aiming to keep climate change on the agenda and inspire local people to take action.

The project included:

  • Training on planning and managing a campaign
  • Training on climate change issues
  • Team building activities
  • Placements at campaigning NGOs including Oxfam, Christian Aid and 10:10.
  • Running mini climate change campaigns between February and April 2010

War on Climate Change Mini-Campaigns

Think Local

The aim of the campaign was to raise awareness among school children about how transport emissions contribute to climate change.

As well as spreading their message via facebook, the volunteers promoted their campaign at Leyton Leisure Lagoon during the school Easter holidays where they handed out eco goody bags and asked children to pledge to reduce their emissions by "Walking on Wednesdays."

Time for Climate Justice

The "Time for Climate Justice" campaigners were passionate about spreading the message that climate change is not just about the environment.  It is about real people's lives who are suffering the consequences of climate change right now.

Volunteers held a workshop at the London Muslim Centre to raise awareness among the local community about the facts and human story of climate change and to share ideas on action to tackle climate change.  They also held a screening of the climate change blockbuster film "Age of Stupid" followed by a discussion.

Sage the World

The "Sage the World" campaign aimed to raise awareness about how food production contributes to climate change and what we can do in the UK to reduce our emissions related to food.

The volunteers worked with a Muslim girl scout's group running a workshop on food production and food growing seasons and planting a herb garden for the scout centre.  The girls will be making their own t-shirts with climate change messages which they will be using the promote the campaign at the annual girl scouts' olympics which will take place in June 2010.
